The week has gotten away from me and the last month’s posts were a bit on the long side, so I’m going with a round-up this week. I haven’t done one since last summer and I have two boxes of pamphlets in my office waiting to be added to the Culinary Pamphlet Collection, the Cocktail Ephemera Collection, and the Culinary Ephemera Collection. The finding aids don’t include these new materials yet (it’s on my to-do list!), but I thought I’d share a preview! You can click on the thumbnails for a larger image and to read the full caption.
Bacardi Party Book. Our cocktail ephemera collection has lots of these, and this the newest one. And no, that’s NOT a pineapple on the cover!
Better Baking. This pamphlet from J. R. Watkins Company is yet another new baking powder advertisement for our collection! We hadn’t come across this company before.
Yacht Club Manual of Salads. This booklet is full of recipes that use “Yacht Club salad dressing.”
Old Mansy Syrup advertisement.
Cow Brand Soda Cook Book, 1913. Cow Brand can still be found today in some regions and is part of the Arm & Hammer label.
Bond Bread pamphlet. This pamphlet includes primarily sandwich recipes.
How to Detect Drugs in Food. Although there isn’t a date on this, a note on the back page talks about drugs in baking powder, suggesting it dates to the “Baking Powder Wars” of the early 20th century.
Magee Cooking Stove. One page advertisement for a (rather large) home kitchen stove.
The Metropolitan Mother Goose. One of many new items from the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company.
Health and Sunshine from the Mediterranean Olive Groves. This pamphlet contains–you guessed it–recipes using olives and olive oil.
Hostess Puzzle. This small box contains an actual wood block puzzle for dinner guests to solve! (And yes, the answer is included!)
This is just a fraction of some of our new pamphlets. If you’re curious to see more, pay us a visit or let us know in the comments section below!
